UPS - New Environmentally-Friendly Vehicle Technology (Video)

An environmentally-friendly delivery vehicle produced in partnership between UPS and Tevva Motors has been launched in Birmingham.

Vehicle Type:

Range-Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV)

Producers:

UPS and Tevva Motors

Potential Range:

400km

Vehicles Produced:

15

The vehicle uses geofencing technology to automatically switch to pure electric mode when reaching a predetermined boundary, such as prior to entering an urban environment or clean air zone.
They also operate using groundbreaking hybrid electric vehicle technology, which increases route range whilst maintaining the cargo capacity of traditional diesel vehicles of the same weight class.

"We are excited and proud that this ground-breaking vehicle is being launched in our city. As many as 900 people per year die early in Birmingham as a result of air pollution and we have a lot to do to address this. The introduction of the Clean Air Zone is the start of this and we need the support of our business community to really make this work. This is an example of the positive solutions that are already being created in order to improve environmental health."

Councillor Waseem Zaffar, Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment at Birmingham City Council

"This is a great initiative for us, which really helps with the city’s sustainability objectives. Electrical vehicle technology is evolving and this technology we have worked on with TEVVA has enabled us to extend electric vehicles range from 100km to 400km, meaning we can go in and out of the city every day. This is game-changing technology because we want to be ahead of the Clean Air Zone 2020 initiative."

Mark Vale, UPS President for UK, Ireland and the Nordics

"Not long after our initial conception as a company, we met UPS and launched our first prototype vehicle in 2015. Now we have rolled out 15 of these REEVs which we can guarantee, thanks to geofencing technology, will be able to adhere to Clean Air Zones, Low Emission Zones and Ultra Low Emission Zones moving forwards."
