Retrofit Vehicle Solutions

Retrofit technologies can make vehicles cleaner to run and ensure compliance with the Clean Air Zone

Vehicles that are not compliant with the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) can be made compliant by retrofitting technologies that reduce harmful emissions. The Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS) certifies manufacturers of retrofit technologies. Vehicles fitted with a CVRAS approved retrofit solution will gain CAZ compliance and will not have to pay to enter a CAZ in Birmingham or any other UK city.

Vehicles that are not compliant with the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) can be made compliant by retrofitting technologies that reduce harmful emissions.

The key retrofit technologies are:

Exhaust after treatment systems – these use a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to reduce emissions of particulate matter and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions. They are applied to an existing vehicle powertrain.
Re-power systems – this involves completely stripping out the existing engine and replacing it with a brand-new powertrain which could be a cleaner diesel engine, a petrol engine + LPG system, a 100% electric powertrain or a hybrid electric powertrain.

CVRAS approved technologies exist for buses, coaches, refuse collection vehicles and Hackney carriages. Solutions for trucks are expected before end 2019. A summary of available technologies is provided below. You can see more details on the technologies and the companies that offer them on the Business Breathes resources page or on the CVRAS webpage.
