Retrofit Vehicle Solutions

Retrofit technologies can make vehicles cleaner to run and ensure compliance with the Clean Air Zone.

Vehicles that are not compliant with the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) can be made compliant by retrofitting technologies that reduce harmful emissions. The Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS) certifies manufacturers of retrofit technologies. Vehicles fitted with a CVRAS approved retrofit solution gain CAZ compliance and do not have to pay to enter a CAZ in Birmingham or any other UK city.

CVRAS approved technologies exist for buses, coaches, trucks, refuse collection vehicles and Hackney carriages.

The key retrofit technologies are:

  • Exhaust after treatment systems – these use a diesel particulate filter (DPF) to reduce emissions of particulate matter and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions. They are applied to an existing vehicle powertrain.
  • Re-power systems – this involves completely stripping out the existing engine and replacing it with a brand-new powertrain which could be a 100% electric powertrain, cleaner diesel engine, a petrol engine + LPG system, or a hybrid electric powertrain.

CVRAS approved technologies exist for buses, coaches, trucks, refuse collection vehicles and Hackney carriages.

While exhaust-after-treatment technologies do not reduce carbon emissions, they provide a way of achieving CAZ compliance without buying a new diesel or petrol vehicle. Extending the lifetime of an existing vehicle like this is a way of “bridging the gap” to a point when zero emission vehicle markets are more developed.

Electric re-power retrofits, where the existing engine is completely replaced by a fully electric powertrain, allow vehicles to be upgraded to zero emissions without purchasing a brand new electric or hydrogen vehicle. This offers a cheaper way of cutting carbon emissions.

A summary of available retrofit technologies and the companies supplying them is provided below, with zero emission options highlighted in green. You can use a step-by-step tool to identify what retrofit options are available for your vehicle using the link below.
